#1 reason I am here today

I’m Caroline Kimble, a Middlbury Highschool senior and I’m here today because I hate wasting time. I’m not saying school, or classes, or the homework I get is a waste of time- I’m actually incredibly grateful for the education I’ve gotten. But I do wonder how much what I’m learning can be applied to make me a better person, of the world a better place to live in. When I look at my school work through that lens I sometimes feel depressed and overwhelmed. I have so much work- but to what end? What’s the point of loading my schedule with AP’s and other hard classes in the grand scheme of things? I finished junior fall pretty exhausted. I’d done a lot, but what had I actually accomplished? I’m taking some hard classes, this year, but I knew something needed to change. I didn’t want to sit in a classroom all day long learning the same things I’ve been trying to learn for 13 years. I heard about What’s the Story through one of my friends, and I’m so excited to take part because I see value in it beyond just head-knowledge. I want to learn about things that maybe haven’t already been solved and taught and in textbooks and memorized and tested on. I want to learn about things that apply to the greater world.

  • I really appreciate that you are here because of empathy. Seriously I can’t think of a better reason. The world needs educated, thinking, and feeling individuals, and listening to stories just might be an essential part of that mix. I would say I’d here for the same reason, but I don’t know if I could have articulated it so well. Thank you for that.

Including a photo of your dog just reinforces that idea, that of empathy. Most pet owners, or pet lovers, seem to know this instinctively, that ability to create relationship without words.

  • I noticed that your post conveys a mood of trying to do something that is bigger than just in your head or on paper, which is a wonderful reason to be doing WtS.
Your post makes me wonder what you want to achieve during WtS, since you mentioned wanting to learn something that has not passed through the filter that is school.
