#1: Here to Make a Change

I’m here because I want to make a positive impact on the community. I want to change the way we live in Vermont, and eventually, the country and world. As I look at our community, I see problems that are indicative of greater problems that we face as a culture, including, sexism, racism, homophobia, and poverty. While these issues seem insignificant or rare in our state, they unfortunately pose a huge problem in the grand scheme of things. I want to help improve Vermont’s society, to the best of my ability, because it’s a step in the right direction, even though the state itself isn’t as troubled as many places.

It makes me sad to think that so many people in the world live in destitute or oppressive situations, and I often feel guilty because I’m not doing anything to help. By taking this class, I believe I can contribute to the solution, even if only in a very small way. If I could make a difference in the quality of even one person’s life, I would be happy.

When we wrote about the skills we had, I wrote about riding horses, and how it makes me feel confident, happy and accomplished. It also makes me feel like I’m making a change. Of course, I’m simply changing a horse’s behavior or attitude, but it still demonstrates to me that I’m making progress. I’m heading in the right direction, for me and for the horse. Riding horses has taught me patience, respect, trust, and self-confidence, skills that have carried over into my everyday life. These abilities will hopefully enable me to make a difference in other people’s lives, as well as my own.
