It’s Amazing How Much Life Can Hinder Productivity, Isn’t It?

The past few weeks have been nothing but a whirlwind.

I’ve been stuck in a cyclone of college applications and post-break mayhem, and my mind hasn’t been completely on the project. I’m ready though, to work really hard this weekend in order to keep us on track.

Let’s go back two weeks, to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Bill, Tim and I traveled to the conference to represent BLTN and to tell the story of What’s the Story.  The exhausting yet richly compelling weekend came to a close with our presentation on Sunday afternoon. However visually anticlimactic our 5 attendees may have appeared, the intimate learning experience was beneficial for all parties involved. It was incredible to talk to just a few teachers from all over the country, interested in creating learning environments similar to that of WtS. It made me realize that the kind of work that all of us are doing in WtS is incredibly ground breaking and immensely important to the progressive learning movement regardless of what we accomplish.

This was evident for me throughout the entire weekend. I was introduced to so many incredible people, and I was amazed at how many people were already familiar with the work of Breaking Binary and were interested in future projects. Many of the professors and teachers I talked to had already, or were interested in using Breaking Binary as a tool for teaching tolerance in their classrooms. Connections like these really motivate me to put my all into this project. The vast amount of promises I’ve made to teachers around the country, that this project is going to be bigger and better than the last makes it impossible for me to not pull through on this. I’m not too worried, I think the Breaking Binary group is focused and committed to making a difference.

It’s amazing how much life can hinder productivity, though, isn’t it? I know this project is something thats immensely important to me as it is for the rest of the group but with about a thousand other things going on, we’ve been a little slow to accomplish our goals. I was planning on calling the Bernie Sanders Burlington headquarters this week. That was pretty much my only goal, but all of my time ended up getting funneled into applying to colleges and studying for AP tests. No fun at all. I’m ready to get a burst of fresh air this weekend at the retreat and refocus my motivation to making real progress on this project and hopefully start filming relatively soon.
