Why I am Here at What’s the Story

I am here at What’s the Story because I want to work with others who express my same desire to spread awareness, and make change. I want to learn and grow as an individual and a part of the community to be more aware about social issues, and try to figure out what can be done help solve them, and what part I can have in that change. There are so many things out there that different people struggle with, that I and many others probably don’t even know about – and I want to be part of a group of people who will help to change that. I’m excited to work with other people who care enough to take time out of their year to help others, and make a lasting impact. It was so cool to collaborate with other advocates and activists, and I can’t wait to continue to do so. At school and in my life, I am the one who doesn’t stand for things like sexist comments or bullying. I am the one who doesn’t just say or do something because it’s “cool”. I am the one who truly wants to change things for the better. And I am always trying to figure out the best way to do that. That’s why I can’t wait  to be a part of What’s The Story, and work with so many other talented people who also want to make a difference. The world today is filled with hate, and anger, and competition, and sorrow. But it’s also filled with hope. It’s also filled with people who want to, and truly can change things. That is who I see myself as, and I hope that I will leave a positive impact on this planet.

I hope to get a lot out of What’s the Story, and to not only learn new life skills myself, but to help others learn and grow as well. I truly believe that when a group of driven people work together, they can accomplish great things. From what I’ve seen so far, everyone in What’s the Story cares so much about such a wide variety of different social issues, and I am so excited to see the impact we will have, and what we will all take away from it. Each person had a unique set of beliefs and values, but we all share at least one thing in common; we all want to make a difference. I am here at What’s the Story to help make that change, and be a part of something truly amazing.

  • Rae, thanks for sharing this. You are right: It should be an exciting year. It will be challenging, too, as you brainstorm ideas on your own and with others and eventually set upon something that you think is important and energizing. Thanks, too, for sharing a bit about yourself, that you are the one who stands up, speaks out, calls people out. It is so fascinating to me that in school (and in other times of life) there is tremendous pressure to fit in, to be part of a group or clique; there is less pressure to stand out, stand up. What’s the Story is a combination — we want to help you work in a group that also honors and engages people who are used to leading, used to challenging.

I look forward to working with you during the year.

  • Hello!
My name is Mariana, and I am a fellow student from Vermont who will be reading your blog this year! Just a tiny bit about me – I am a junior at Hazen Union in Hardwick, Vermont. I attended What’s the Story Vermont last year, and worked on a project on the power and importance of the arts within communities.
I agree that WtS is a great place to be around people who care so much about social change – truly an amazing group of people. I think you’re going to have a blast, and I look forward to reading more about what you’re doing!
    Good luck!

    • Thanks I’m so exited you’re going to be reading my blog!

    Rae,

It certainly sounds like you’ve joined WTS for all the right reasons. The world certainly needs more folks who stand up for themselves and others in the face of injuctice. The goal now will be to find that one issue that makes you want to act more than all others. How do you make change? How do you stay burning with passion to do so? You will face some challenges this year, but you’ll also have a whole lot of fun. We’re glad to have you with us!

    • Thank you I’m very excited for all the challenges that will come my way!

  • Dear Rae,
I loved this blog post and I’m so excited to be working with you this year. It sounds like we’re both doing WTS for the same reasons and I’m so excited to work with you to make change in the world!

  • Hi Rae, I am so touched by what you wrote. I also love working with people who want to impact people’s live, and I am really happy to work with you at What’s the story.

    Let’s make the difference together : )!
